Abdominal liposuction refers to liposuction, or lipoplasty, that is performed on the torso area. Most candidates for this procedure have attempted a diet and exercise routine but are unable to achieve their goal of a flatter stomach. It is very common that fat deposits in the abdominal area are difficult to diminish, especially in women after childbirth. The abdominal area is generally one of the best areas of the body for this type of cosmetic surgery. However, as with most cosmetic surgeries, abdominal liposuction is generally not considered medically necessary and risk factors should be considered.

//-->

<script type="text/javascript"

Many abdominal liposuction surgeries are performed using the tumescent technique. This method involves injecting a solution of local anesthetics into area to be treated. The fluids help the area to swell, leaving an opening where the liposuction tube can be easily inserted and navigated. With this technique the risks of blood loss and general anesthesia are eliminated and recovery time may well be reduced. Many doctors claim that recipients of the tumescent method can often return to work in as little as three days.

Many factors are taken into consideration when a patient requests abdominal liposuction. In the case of women who have given birth, pregnancy often leaves pouches of fat in the abdominal area that are seemingly resistant to diet and exercise. According to physicians, most women who have this type of liposuction performed are happy with the results and very few require an additional tummy-tuck. Abdominal liposuctions are also very effective in eliminating the bulge associated with C-sections and hysterectomies.

Another factor to consider is the location of the body fat. Physicians refer to the two types of abdominal fat as superficial and deep. Superficial body fat is the fat that exists between the muscle tissue and the surface skin. Deep (or intestinal) fat resides below the muscle tissue and is actually located on the intestines. While liposuction can effectively remove fat that is superficial, it is not possible to remove intestinal body fat with this method. This type of fat can only be removed by diet and exercise – no surgical procedure is safe or available to remove deep fat. The good news for patients is that most people have much more superficial fat than deep fat, thereby greatly increasing the success rate for abdominal liposuction.

Some factors that influence results include prior obesity, gender, and age. In the case of recent obesity and weight loss, the fat is very fibrous and is very difficult to remove. Those over the age of 60 tend to have more elastic, less firm skin, thereby making liposuction difficult, and may not achieve the desired outcome. Since women tend to have less fibrous fat pockets than men, abdominal liposuction is usually easier to perform on women. The key to obtaining desired results and feeling satisfied with the surgery is to be comfortable and knowledgable about all aspects of the procedure.

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure for men and women generally in good shape and health but who have large fat deposits around their abdomen or have and excess of loose skin. Abdominoplasty can reduce protruding abdominal fat but it does leave a lengthy, permanent, sometimes visible scar that runs the length of the hipbones. Most people who undergo abdominoplasty are women who don’t intend to bear more children and whose previous pregnancies stretched their abdominal muscles or people suffering from obesity whose skin elasticity has diminished. Depending upon the amount of excess fat and skin a patient has and the area of the excess, different types of abdominoplasty procedures can be performed.

Tummy Tuck

During a tummy tuck, an incision is made along the length between the hipbones and around the belly button, the skin is removed along the abdominal wall up to the ribs, the vertical muscles of the abdomen are tightened and the flap of excess abdominal fat is removed and the skin is pulled down, cut off and the remaining flap is sewn back into place along the initial incision.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini-abdominoplasty, often paired with tumescent liposuction, is a more limited procedure, but still effective for many people, including those who have only lost muscle tone and skin elasticity in the lower region of the abdomen below the belly button. This surgery can be just as effective and the incision can be smaller and recover time is less. Thus this can be the solution for people with only a slight tummy problem.

Endoscopic Tummy Tuck

Endoscopic tummy tuck is abdominoplasty aided by an endoscope, a tiny camera, and is best for people who have excess fat below the belly button alone but have not lost skin elasticity. Muscles can be tightened and fat can be removed through liposuction via tiny holes made above the pubis or through the belly button. This is a very popular procedure because it leaves little scarring unlike more traditional tummy tuck procedures. However there is a risk of infection if the incision doesn’t drain properly.

Panniculectomy Surgery

Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the large/long overlap of skin on the lower abdominal area. This usually occurs in morbidly obese individuals who have lost a substantial amount of weight. Without correcting this problem, there is a risk of developing chronic and persistent local skin conditions such as intertrigo, intertriginous dermatitis, cellulites, ulcerations, necrosis, and inflammation of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Panniculectomy is unlike abdominoplasty because it does not deal at all with abdominal muscles. Panniculectomy is simply the removal of excess fat and skin from the “apron” left hanging anywhere from just barely above the mons pubis down to the knees or beyond.

Most abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, but in some of the less invasive types of procedures (such as the partial abdominoplasty) can be performed under local anesthesia in conjunction with a sedative.

Make no mistake – having a tummy tuck is major surgery, and it can take anything from a couple of weeks to months for you to recover.

The medical term for a tummy tuck is Abdominoplasty. The purpose of a tummy tuck is to tighten the abdomen walls and muscles. It does a great job of minimizing a protruding stomach, but it’s not always straightforward. Some possible side effects after having a tummy tuck include scarring, infection or a long recovery period.

Some people think that a tummy tuck is a magical solution to help them lose a substantial amount of weight, but this isn’t true. In fact, a good surgeon will usually refuse to perform this surgery on a very obese person. There are too many risks, both with the surgery and the anesthesia, for a surgeon to consider a tummy tuck on an obese person. It’s extremely likely that an obese person who does have a tummy tuck will have an extended recovery period because of major complications after the surgery.

A woman who is planning to become pregnant, or has in fact had a recent pregnancy, should definitely not have a tummy tuck. Pregnancy puts a lot of pressure on the abdominal wall, and the tummy tuck scare may not be able to stand the strain. After a woman has been pregnant her body needs time to recover, and it’s important to take that time, rather than putting more pressure on your body and system with major surgery.

Tummy tuck surgery is a major surgical procedure, and so there are always possible postoperative problems that can occur. These might include infection of the wound, blood clots or chest infections. Some people also have skin that takes a long time to heal, so that could mean they have to stay in hospital much longer than planned, and will have a much longer recovery period.

It’s also not recommended that people who’ve undergone abdominal surgery previously have a tummy tuck, particularly if there is some scarring left behind from the earlier surgery. The risk of compromising recovery from the tummy tuck would be greatly increased.

One important thing to note is that it’s important to get out of bed and move about as soon as you can after you’ve had tummy tuck surgery. This helps to promote healing of the wound and will speed up your recovery time. Staying in bed after major surgery is actually one of the worst things you can choose to do.

I’m going on a tummy reduction campaign. You see, I’ve always been one of those lucky people who never had to bother much with weight loss, diets, or any of that other stuff, and could always eat whatever I wanted. I didn’t even work out much.

Then, recently – you guessed it – all that lack of exercise and excess of junk food finally caught up with me. It’s been happening for years, slowly, though, so I never really paid much attention. Sure, my clothes were slightly snugger than they used to be, but that was to be expected. After all, my job involved sitting at a desk all day, and though I could take the stairs, why get all hot and bothered over it when the lift was conveniently available?

Now, I’ve been considering my options. I don’t really want to do anything very difficult, but I want to be in shape before all the Christmas parties start and I start meeting all those friends, colleagues and relatives who are definitely going to tell me that I’ve ‘put on weight’. The comparatively nice ones, that is, who don’t come out and say, “Oh gosh! You’ve gotten so fat!” And in all those gorgeous dresses, my little paunch is pretty obvious, so that’s the first area I want to reduce, hence my tummy reduction campaign.

Well, I thought about starting by drinking lots of water. That seemed the easiest thing to do out of all the suggestions that I’ve read. So I tried it out, and you know what? It’s actually not that easy. It’s so much easier to reach for a glass of Coke, or coffee or fruit juice than a glass of water. Ironic, when you consider that soft drinks actually make you thirstier. So now I’m working on my water – drinking skills, replacing one of my many cups of coffee with water. Step one, covered. Step two was eating right – not very easy because I get hungry a lot, and tend to reach for the nearest packet of crisps. How am I dealing with this? Replacing junk food and by stocking my fridge with fresh fruits, and munching on them instead when I get hungry.

Next, I figured I’d need an exercise program if I was serious about the whole tummy reduction thing, because there was no way my stomach was just going to get in shape just by me drinking lots of water and eating healthier. I’m still working on this one, because halfway through the week, something always comes up, and I end up postponing my workout. I’m keeping at it though, and with a little luck and lots more perseverance, I’ll be ready for December.

Many times people get frustrated because it seems that no matter how much weight they lose or how much exercise they engage in, there is just no getting rid of the pouch in their abdomen.

What a lot of people do not realize is that once the abdominal skin has been stretched due to pregnancy or perhaps excessive weight gain it often cannot get back to the original shape no matter what you do.

Two common and very popular procedures that help people with the “pouchy abdomen” look is liposuction and the tummy tuck. The question you need to ask is which procedure would be best for you?
If your main concern is fat in the lower abdomen there is a good possibility that you may be a good candidate for liposuction. During a liposuction procedure fat deposits located beneath the skin are removed. This is done by using a hollow stainless steel tube as a vacuum to suck the fat out. Liposuction can be done using a local anesthesia or a general anesthesia. You and your doctor will decide what anesthesia will be best for you.

Typically people who have a lot of fat, lax muscles and loose skin hanging over your abdomen you may want to consider a mini for full tummy tuck. The full tummy tuck procedure will tighten your muscles, remove excess skin if necessary and tighten the skin up. A tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty and is a very invasive surgery. An incision is made just above the pubic area and the skin is lifted, the muscles are tightened, excess skin is removed and then the skin is stretched up. Your belly button will need to be repositioned because of the tightening up of the skin.

A mini tummy tuck is a good procedure for someone who is concerned about a small pouch of fat in their lower abdomen. In a mini tummy tuck procedure the belly button does not need to be repositioned because the procedure does not involve stretching the skin up that far. The recovery time for a mini tummy tuck is usually less because it is not such an involved procedure.

If you are in the market for a tummy tuck you should find out which procedure would be good for you. Any reputable doctor will be happier to do the least invasive procedure on you which would be liposuction. When you are looking for a surgeon be sure to ask questions and find someone who has a good reputation.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Differ From Liposuction?

One of the most common dilemmas for patients who are concerned with their abdomen is whether they would be better served with a Los Angeles tummy tuck or liposuction.

Questions and answers? Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty

While an Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is designed to remove loose abdominal skin to tighten the abdomen, liposuction is designed to remove excess fat.

Tummy Tuck Liposuction: the Way to a Perfect Middle

A potential tummy tuck liposuction candidate risks a number of side effects of the surgery, including infection, bleeding, healing problems and adverse reaction to anesthesia.

Tummy Tuck Vs. Liposuction

A tummy tuck is more traumatic to the body that is liposuction, and in particular, tumescent liposuction.

Tummy tuck is a procedure that is used to reshape and firm up the abdominal area. Known as abdominoplasty surgery, tummy tuck involves removing unwanted fat and skin from the lower abdominal area in order to tighten up the abdominal walls. A tummy tuck is usually performed on people who have abdominal fat that do not seem to respond to diet and exercise.

A full tummy tuck procedure is done by performing an incision across the lower abdomen – from one hip to the other. The incision is shaped like a ‘V’ with a flat bottom that cuts across the top of the pubic area. Then, another incision is made surrounding the navel to free the skin. The skin is then peeled away from the abdominal area to reveal the fat and muscles below. Once the unwanted fat is removed and the muscles tightened, excess skin is trimmed off the remaining skin is stitched into place. A new hole is cut to form the navel.

It is best to have a thorough medical checkup if you do plan to go for a tummy tuck procedure. Seeing as how tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure, it is best to know your current state of health to minimize complications during and after surgery. The doctor in charge can also advise if a tummy tuck is really the best way to go to firm up your lower abdomen.

If your abdominal fat problem is not too bad, then a mini tummy tuck might be the way to go. For the mini tummy tuck, only a small, straight incision is performed above the pubic area. Excess fat is then removed and the wound would be stitched closed. Some doctors would also perform liposuction together with a mini tummy tuck for better results. There are even doctors that would perform a mini tummy tuck plus liposuction immediately after performing a caesarian baby delivery.

As with any surgery, there will be some recovery time that would need to be observed. A mini tummy tuck will not take too long to recover compared to a full tummy tuck. After a full tummy tuck, you lower abdominal area would most likely be swollen. The doctor would place a tube running out of your abdomen temporarily to drain off excess fluids accumulated during surgery. Getting up out of bed would be challenging for a few days, as would be going to the toilet. Avoid lying prone in bed all the time as this could retard your healing. When you feel that you can, try and move about to gets the blood circulation going.

Expect the surgery scars to last from 9 months to a year after a full tummy tuck. Also be aware that these scars might never really disappear although surgeons will often ensure that the scars are easily hidden under a bathing suit. If you want to, you could go for a plastic surgery procedure to remove the scars from your tummy tuck.

Ask your plastic surgeon lots of questions about the tummy tuck procedure and any complications that could develop following your tummy tuck surgery. Being well informed is the best choice you can do for yourself and should help alleviate most concerns you may have.

Listed below are some of the complications associated with the tummy tuck procedure that should be addressed with your plastic surgeon.

Allergic reaction – to the anesthesia

Infection – can be a serious problem and if bleeding occurs may develop into a hematoma

Hematoma – A collection of blood under the skin (commonly referred to a blood blister)

Blood clots – More common with women taking birth control pills.

Fat necrosis – After the abdominal wall has been stretched. Blood supply to the remaining fat and skin has been damaged. On rare occasions this may lead to necrosis of the fat cells which then become liquefied and hardened.

Swelling – Mostly lasts for a month a month to six weeks following surgery.

Bruising – Common in the abdomen area but in severe cases can extend to the surrounding skin.

Skin Loss – The abdominal wall is stretched during surgery and blood supply to the skin may be damaged which may result in death of the skin in the surrounding areas. This is more common in people with diabetes and smokers. If this occurs a skin graft may be needed.

Wound Separation – Scar tissue heals slowly and some separation may be expected, although rarely a problem it may lead to a heavier scar and slower recovery.

Some common plastic surgery techniques being utilized today to reduce complications in certain areas following your tummy tuck surgery are as follows.

Pain and nausea can be greatly reduced if your plastic surgeon injects and long lasting numbing medicine in the rectus muscle which has been tightened during the tummy tuck procedure. This is a simple procedure if performed by your plastic surgeon will most likely reduce complications from pain and expedite your recovery from plastic surgery.

Applying a topical steroid cream for a few days following surgery will significantly reduce complications from scarring, and if followed up for about six weeks your scars will fade faster and become much less noticeable.

Fluid collection under the skin following your tummy tuck surgery can be reduced by placing drains under the skin at the time surgery is performed.

Another procedure you may ask your plastic surgeon about for reducing the complications of fluid collection is by placing internal stitches between the fascia (gristle) and the underside of your fat. Most likely this will prevent any complications from fluid collection before they start.

This tummy tuck procedure may reduce the time of having your drains in place to just 2-3 days following your tummy tuck surgery

Becoming educated in the tummy tuck procedure is your responsibility and should not be avoided. Only then will you be able to make wise choice finding a qualified plastic surgeon that you will be confident with to perform your tummy tuck surgery.

After carefully choosing your plastic surgeon you will then be able to understand the procedures in place to reduce any risk of complications.

Often times as humans we tend to lose patience with a lot of things. Losing weight or getting a six pack abs is no exception. We want to lose weight now. There are a wide variety of alternative ways of losing weight or sculpting a perfect body, quickly. Liposuction is one of them. I’m not endorsing liposuction in any way.

If you’re considering liposuction to get a 6 pack abs, then this article will give you a basic understanding of the process of the surgery. When it can aid, how it is done and how you might look and feel after the surgery. It is important to note that 6Pack.co.za is not promoting liposuction. Proper nutrition, cardio exercise is the way to go.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a process that can used to sculpt the body by removing surplus fat from targeted areas. Sculpting can be done one a lot of areas including the abdomen, thighs, buttocks etc.

Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy.

As technology advances a lot of new techniques are being used, including ultrasound assisted lipoplasty, super wet technique, and the tumescent technique. There are some of the new tools that can assist many plastic surgeons to help patients achieve their goals quicker.

It is important to note that no type of liposuction is a substitute for proper old fashioned dieting and exercise. However it can be a useful tool that can be used to remove stubborn areas of fat that does not react to traditional weight loss methods or exercises.

If you are seriously considering doing liposuction, then do the following:

· Consult a medical doctor and plastic surgeon to see if you qualify to become a candidate.

· Do some research by reading up on liposuction and also the alternative techniques.

· Speak to people that have gone through it.

· Weigh up the pro’s and the con’s of the surgery

For who is Liposuction?

People who have realistic expectations of what the surgery can do for them. They should be physically fit, mentally stable and realistic in their expectations. The candidate should also have a normal weight and elastic skin. The surgery carries a great risk for potential candidates with medical problems. People with poor blood circulation, diabetes, and heart or lung disease should not do the surgery. They have to consult with the medical experts.

The process: A basic explanation.

1. The doctor must consult with potential candidate and evaluate if the person is medically and mentally fit for a surgery.

2. If medical check is successful then the plastic surgeon can help you decide on which option or technique to take. Here the candidate can ask lots of questions.

3. Preparation and guidelines are given by surgeon. What to eat and drink, smoking etc.

4. Venue is given where surgery is going to take place.

5. Surgeon chooses anesthesia to be used. Depending on the volume of fat to be removed.

6. The surgery time will vary depending on the amount of fat to be removed.

7. The surgeon inserts a tube through small incisions in the skin. At the other end of the tube is a vacuum pressure unit that suctions off the fat.

8. After surgery a compression garment is given. This helps to reduce swelling and after a couple of weeks there should be positive results.

9. Surgeon might suggest for patient to walk around to reduce swelling and prevent blood cloths from forming.

10. Strenuous activities should be cut out.

11. Patient should go for regular follow up visits to the doctor to monitor and also to check the progression.

12. The new you. There should be a visible difference.

It is important to note that nothing in life is guaranteed and there are lots of risks involved. Results will vary from person to person. If a person’s expectations are realistic, they will be very pleased with the outcome of the surgery. Person might feel better in clothes and more confident about self. The flat stomach might be visible.

Healthy diet and proper regular exercise should be in place, to maintain the new shape. This is one of the most important steps after a surgery.

There are numerous factors which help determine our waist size. For some of us, those days of size 2 jeans and bikinis went out the door when we had children. For other, we have struggled all our life to trim our waistline. Time, age, and environmental factors can rob us of the figure we are more comfortable with and leave us with a very stubborn waistline that won’t seem to firm up no matter what we do.

Some of us choose to remedy the situation with what we consider to be a quick little tummy tuck. Tummy tucks are in fact medical procedures, and while many people are quite happy with the results, patients who understand the mechanics and expectations after the procedure are more likely to fair much better afterward.

All surgery, including cosmetic surgery, comes with its share of risks. Anesthesia does occasionally throw out a few unexpected complications. However, when we weigh the risks against the benefits, most people feel the risks are small enough to accept. Cosmetic surgery will require ample recovery time.

The recovery times for cosmetic surgery various with each procedure. Obviously a tummy tuck will be more initially restricting than a nose job, although most people can return to work within about two to three weeks. People with more physically demanding jobs may require an extra week or two at home.

The tummy tuck is a medical procedure that requires cautious movement in recovery and ample understanding of the restrictions imposed for recovery prior to going through with this particular cosmetic procedure.

The Tummy Tuck

The tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure that is based on surgically tightening up the abdominal muscles in order to slim down the waistline. You are essentially “tucking” the unwanted body layers underneath itself much the same way we fold clothes. Naturally it’s a little more complicated than that, but you get the idea.

When a cosmetic surgeon begins the tummy tuck process, he makes two incisions. One along the hip bone around the pubic area and the other releases the belly button so it can be reattached in a new position later. The skin is then separated from the torso in order to reveal the muscle underneath. This is where the heart of the tummy tuck occurs. This exposed abdominal muscle is what the surgeon will the stitch into a tighter, reshaped waistline. By tightening up the muscle and actually stitching it in place, new definition to the lower abdomen if formed and the results are typically a smaller waistline.

The description of the tummy tuck may not sound pleasant, but it is important for patients to understand what is happening to their body so they can recover accordingly. Understanding the procedure prepares patients better and they often have shorter recovery time because they don’t try to take on too much too early.

Recovering from the Tummy Tuck

Recovering from any cosmetic procedure can be a timely process. It is still surgery after all. Tummy tucks take a fair amount of recovery time and absolutely a time frame that does not allow the patient to lift or carry. The first few days after surgery are the roughest, and the patient must experience the discomfort of the natural bruising and swelling that occurs when the body is rearranged.

Typically it only takes about five day for the incisions to heal after surgery and the stitches are removed. This does not mean, however, that the patient can then return to anything resembling normal activities. There is still a lot of healing to be done after this type of cosmetic procedure.

The patient will be required to wear a support specifically designed for post tummy tuck recovery time to help the muscles adjust and stay in place, as well as to protect the new waistline from harm while it heals. Most patients report that the support also relieves pain initially as it helps to hold everything in the abdomen in place and relieves stress.

The tummy tuck does leave scars. Most cosmetic procedures will leave minimal scarring, and while the tummy tuck is no different it can take anywhere from nine to twelve months before the scarring has reduced enough to show off the new waistline.

The Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are a method of returning a figure, most often, to a pre-child bearing condition. The vast majority of tummy tuck patients are women whose abdomens lost their elasticity due to childbirth. Often the muscles can not regain their original structure which is why simply dieting and exercise may help but won’t work.

We live in a society where overweight and out of shape people often do not receive the same opportunities as healthy looking slender people. For women and men who are trying alternative methods of weight reduction without success, the tummy tuck offers a positive solution.

Just like nose jobs, face lifts, and other cosmetic procedures, tummy tucks are effective tools to bringing about the best physical body possible for any individual wishing to attain a higher level of appearance. There is great debate whether this is an emotionally healthy approach, however a society will not change overnight and criticism can be fierce.

For the most part tummy tucks are a permanent solution to the battle of the waistline. Although bearing more children may result in terminating the effects of the initial tummy tuck at least partially if not all the way.

Important Considerations

Cosmetic procedures are not for everyone. People who are in very poor physical shape may not recover as quickly or thoroughly as those who exercise regularly. People who are sensitive to anesthesia also may want to seriously consider the risk benefit ratio before having any cosmetic procedure attempted.

Cosmetic surgery is a science and an art. The human body is the canvas and it is important to take into consideration that the canvases are not perfect. Cosmetic surgeons can not guarantee results because our bodies are simply never going to be perfect. Often the cosmetic surgeon can significantly enhance our appearance, but they can not fix everything.

Taking your recovery seriously is one way to help ensure that the expected results become the final results. Whether it’s a tummy tuck or a nose job or liposuction, following your surgeon’s post operative instructions is imperative to good results.

Prior to attempting the tummy tuck, you should do your very best to get in good shape with strong abdominal muscles. I know we said that we’re doing this because exercising wasn’t producing the results desired, but at least strengthening your muscles should help not only in shorter recovery periods, but with the over all success of the operation as well.

Talk to your plastic surgeon well in advance about pre operative exercise that can help him do his job better. Tummy tucks take better on firmer muscles than on loose muscles. He should be able to advise you of which exercises will target the specific muscles he believes will assist you in your recovery and success.

While you are firming up, remember your diet. Vegetables and protein can help to prepare your body for the cosmetic procedure, but beware of any vegetable containing high amounts of vitamin K in the two weeks prior to your tummy tuck. Vitamin K is a natural blood thinner and can enhance bleeding during your tummy tuck. Ibuprofen can do this as well.

Preparing your body well for any cosmetic procedure can help your surgeon do a better job and assist your recovery is many ways. After all, you are commencing on the tummy tuck to improve your overall look.

The Final Result

After you have prepared your body, watched your diet, done your exercises, and gone through with the cosmetic procedure it is now time to take special care of yourself. If you can afford it, a few recovery days in a spa or inclusive result can do a world of good toward your final results.

However, perhaps an alternative to an expensive spa if you’re lucky, is an especially attentive significant other to tend to your needs during those first few painful days. The rest will do you well and the care can boost your recovery.

Once you have put in the effort throughout your recovery from your tummy tuck, it won’t be long before you begin to see actual results. The swelling will reduce and give way to a shapelier you within a couple of short weeks. Over time, your body will heal and slowly reveal its new self.

The scarring will eventually subside and you will be left with a flatter, firmer tummy and a sexier body. After all, that was the point of all this wasn’t it? Luckily you will be able to see some results along the way until you are finally recovered from your tummy tuck. If you timed it well, you may even have that brand new shape just as swim suit season comes rolling. Perhaps it’s time to hit the beach.

A friend of mine lost over 60 pounds by eating well and exercising. She looked marvelous except for the extra padding around the abdomen, which refused to budge, despite her exercise and diet regimen. That was when she considered a “tummy tuck.”

Maybe you’re lucky. Maybe you don’t have a tummy that protrudes a bit more with each passing year, no matter how often you go to the gym and how faithful you are to the south beach diet. If you’re not one of the lucky ones though, you might consider abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck.

It’s a surgical procedure which means there are the risks associated with it. But the wisest thing to do is to look at your situation carefully and see if the benefits outweigh the risks. Because of new developments in the procedure, the benefits are considerable.

What exactly is a tummy tuck? Abdominoplasty is the reduction of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and the tightening of muscles of the abdominal wall. Depending on the needs of the patient and the methods of the surgeon, a tummy tuck can vary in scope and process. Some doctors combine abdominoplasty with liposuction, for example, while others do not.

Why have a tummy tuck? It reduces the normal sagging that is part of the aging process. For women, childbearing can accelerate this sagging. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin which loses its original elasticity. A tummy tuck can get your tummy closer to a youthful, flat state. For many, this provides not only a physical lift, but a mental lift as well. The results can be dramatic.

This procedure is especially appropriate for middle-aged women and men who are in good health and who have tried diet and exercise but have not been able to reduce the fat deposits and loose skin around the abdomen. If you’re in the process of losing weight, it’s better to wait until you’ve reached your goal before you have the procedure. Look at the tummy tuck as that extra bonus you give yourself for reaching your weight loss goals.

And if you are indeed considering the procedure, read as much as you can about it before you make the decision to go ahead. Are you willing to risk side effects and even death (extremely rare) to look better? Many of us are. But if you are not, then forego the decision or wait until you can better assess the situation. If you feel that looking good is vital for you, then you need to consider the selection of the surgeon. This selection of a competent surgeon is critical to your successful outcome. Interview several candidates and ask for references. You need a surgeon who is not only highly skilled and experienced, but who makes you feel comfortable, answers your questions–someone you have confidence in. And there’s no substitute for talking with other people who’ve had the procedure.

Financially, you’re probably going to have to foot the bill yourself. For most people, tummy tuck is an elective procedure not covered by health insurance policies. It’s always wise to check with your insurance companies because your doctor and insurance company may deem the procedure necessary for special reasons. If, for example, your overall weight threatened your health and you had stomach reduction surgery, then tummy tuck is necessary because now your body needs some toning and tucking due the results of the reduction surgery. Checking out with your insurance company is worth a try.

One final word of advice: make sure that you have tried the diet and exercise routines and that these routines are a regular part of your lifestyle. A tummy tuck should not be a short term solution; it is part of a long term solution that you already have in place for yourself. My friend looks wonderful; she has continued her exercise regimen; she eats well; is active and vibrant in the community; she continues to be part of weight watchers and has become a prominent example of healthy living for all of us.
